Finger Sizing Guide

Finger sizing is a very important part of your ring purchase.  We find in our business that a wrong size is pretty much the only reason people are ever unhappy with their new rings.  If you get the size right then you will almost certainly be happy with your purchase.   Wedding bands are especially important to get right the first time, because a design often goes all the way around the ring making future sizing very difficult or impossible.  Use this finger sizing guide to help insure that your ring fits just right.

Do I need to be measured at a jewelry store?

Yes.  There is no home method that will be accurate enough.  Don't bother with these kind of things:

This finger measuring technique does not work  This will not tell you the exact finger size that you need.
Finger measuring this way will not work.
Below are the kind of finger measuring gauges you may find in your local jewelry store. Generally jewelers are happy to help you with this at no charge.  It's important to use gauges that most closely match the width of the ring that you are buying.  Here we have narrow gauges, wide gauges, and comfort fit gauges (rounded on the inside).  If you are buying a comfort fit ring then use comfort fit gauges if they are available.  If they're not available then narrow finger gauges work pretty well.

What size are you at this moment?

That’s right, we are changing all the time.  We have learned that it’s often wise to measure yourself more than once if possible.  Everyone is unique, but most of us gain about a half size in the Summer over our Winter size.  We are often larger if we have done a lot of walking during the day as well.  Other factors like diet can affect your size as well.  Be aware, if possible, of how you feel right now.

What should the right size feel like?

Everyone has their own personal feeling about this.  Some people like a tight fitting ring, while others feel claustrophobic if the ring hugs too much.

The best measure of fit is how easily the ring comes off the finger.

Once the ring is past the knuckle we can often see some looseness, but for many of us the knuckle is the widest part of the finger, is less pliable, and is what we are really measuring.  After putting on the sample ring sizer, take it off and observe how easy or difficult it was to take it off.  We like to see some resistance to taking it off, not so much that you need hand creme to remove it, but enough resistance that the ring won’t come off when you go swimming.

Wide rings feel tighter than narrow rings.

This is why jewelers have wide and narrow finger measuring gauges.  A wider ring often requires as much as a 1/2 larger size to fit like a narrow ring would.  Don't determine the finger size you need until you know if you are buying a wide or a narrow ring, and if it's comfort fit or not.

Comfort fit styles fit like a narrow ring.

Even wider comfort~fit designs tend to fit like a narrow ring, because they are rounded and more “slippery” on the inside.  Use a narrow finger measuring gauge to measure yourself when considering a comfort~fit style, or better yet use actual comfort-fit gauges if they are available.

The right hand fingers are often 1/2 size larger than the left.

Most of us are right handed which makes those fingers a little larger.  We find that left handed people are harder to predict, perhaps because they are often somewhat ambidextrous.
