Inscribed in Spanish: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
The lines of the Gospel of St. Matthew 6:9-13, are known among the Christian churches as the Lord's Prayer, and as such appear in many forms and translations. The first Irish Gaelic edition of the New Testament was published in 1602, the complete Bible not being available until 1685. It is here copied from the translation which was produced in 1830 and is decorated with the Irish Cross or cros cheilteach, commonly found in Ireland and popularly believed to have been introduced by St. Patrick.
